it's not at all a "requirement" that a cloud must take on an anvil shape in order for lightning to occur. That makes me think that perhaps by now, I should have seen an anvil-shaped cloud in the distance, if they are at all likely in my part of the world.Īlso it seems you are in agreement with another poster, that the updraft must be strong enough, i.e. What I meant was if the forecast is for storms, or I hear thunder in the very far distance, I will get in the car if I can. my fear of lightning is too great to let me leave the house to get in the car "during" a thunderstorm. I was very clumsy when I said "I get in the car and drive around during storms". It made me go back and read what I'd written. Good point about being under/near the storm. And in doing so, I get a good view of the clouds all around. But I'm not sure that's it, because often I get in the car and drive around during storms, because I feel safer in a car. One explanation could be that I'm so fearful of lightning that I tend to be indoors if the forecast is for storms. Or is it that the idea of the anvil-shaped cloud has been cut-and-pasted a little too often, and while it can occur, it is far from the most likely thing you'll see during a thunderstorm? Yet, as I say, never, ever, ever have I seen an anvil-shaped cloud.Īny ideas why this may be? Does the 'classic' anvil-shaped thunder cloud typically form only in certain parts of the world (I'm in the UK). I'm pretty good at spotting what clouds are likely to indicate the onset of a thunderstorm. Yet never once have I seen an anvil-shaped cloud associated with a thunderstorm. I'm now well into my middle ages, and I have a particular fear of lightning, so I'm always looking at the clouds, and many of my hobbies involve being outdoors, so I see a lot of "weather". I don't think I've ever read any book on clouds / weather without a picture of a large "anvil-shaped" cloud being used to illustrate a "classic" thunderstorm cloud.
